How to Choose an SEO Agency in Cardiff: A Buyer’s Guide

Key takeaways

  • Start with your goals and budget, then shortlist agencies with proof of results in a similar market.
  • A local agency helps if you rely on Cardiff and South Wales customers, but expertise matters more than postcode.
  • Ask who will do the work, what happens in the first 90 days and how success will be reported.
  • Avoid guaranteed rankings, fixed link quotas, long lock-in contracts and agencies that keep your accounts in their name.

To choose an SEO agency in Cardiff, start by defining what you want SEO to achieve and what you can spend. Then shortlist two or three agencies with proven results for businesses like yours, ask each the same questions about who will do the work, what happens in the first 90 days and how success will be measured, and avoid anyone who guarantees rankings or locks you into a long contract. Local knowledge is a bonus; honest expertise is essential.

I run Eigme Digital from Cardiff, so I am obviously not neutral. But I would rather you hire the right agency than the wrong one, even if that is not us. This guide is the advice I give friends who ask how to pick an SEO partner in the city.

Start with your goals, not the agency

Before you contact anyone, write down a few things. It takes half an hour and makes every conversation more useful.

  • What you want more of. Calls, quote requests, bookings, online sales or something else.
  • Where your customers are. Cardiff only, specific areas such as Cardiff Bay, Pontcanna or Llandaff, South Wales, the whole of Wales or the UK.
  • Which services or products matter most. Usually the ones with the best margins or the most capacity.
  • Your budget range. Even a rough range helps agencies propose something realistic.
  • Your timeline. If you need leads this month, SEO alone will not get you there.
  • What has been tried before. Previous agencies, website changes and anything that went wrong.

Our guide to setting marketing goals can help you turn these into clear targets.

Does it matter if the agency is in Cardiff?

For many businesses, a local agency has real advantages. Cardiff searchers use the names of neighbourhoods, landmarks and nearby towns, and a local team knows these without being told. They will know which local directories, business groups and publications are worth appearing in, and which competitors dominate the map results. They can also meet you in person, which many owners value.

Wales adds another layer. Welsh and English are both official languages, and some Cardiff businesses benefit from Welsh content, especially those working with public bodies or Welsh-speaking customers. An agency that understands bilingual sites can advise whether it is worth it for you. Our article on bilingual websites for Welsh businesses covers the details.

That said, location is not everything. If you sell online across the UK, experience in ecommerce matters far more than an office in the city. Judge expertise first and postcode second.

What a good SEO agency looks like

Good agencies share some clear traits, whatever their size.

They can show relevant results

Ask for examples of work for businesses similar to yours, ideally with numbers such as growth in organic enquiries or revenue, not just rankings. Ask whether you can speak to a current client. Google’s own guidance on hiring an SEO recommends asking for examples of previous work and success stories.

They explain their thinking clearly

You should come away from the first call understanding what they think is holding your site back and what they would do first. If you leave confused by jargon, that will not improve once you have signed.

They practise what they preach

Look at the agency’s own website. Is it fast, clear and well written? Does it have useful content and real people behind it? An agency that cannot look after its own site is unlikely to look after yours.

They are honest about what they cannot do

Trustworthy agencies tell you when something is outside their expertise, when your budget is too small for your goals or when another channel would work better. Be wary of an agency that says yes to everything.

They show you the people

Check who works there and how experienced they are. A team page with real names and roles is a good sign. You can see ours on our team and editorial standards page.

Questions to ask before you sign

Ask every agency on your shortlist the same questions so you can compare answers fairly.

  1. What would you focus on first for our business, and why?
  2. Who will do the work, and how experienced are they? Will you deal with the same person who pitched?
  3. What will happen in the first 90 days? Look for an audit, a plan and early fixes.
  4. How do you approach local SEO in Cardiff? Listen for Google Business Profile, reviews, citations, location pages and local links.
  5. How do you build links? Good answers mention digital PR, partnerships and useful content, not packages of links.
  6. How will you report progress? Ask to see a sample report.
  7. Will we own everything? Your website, content, Google Business Profile, Analytics and Search Console should all stay in your name.
  8. What is the contract length and notice period?
  9. What do you need from us? Honest agencies explain which parts depend on your input and approvals.

Red flags to watch for

These warning signs come up again and again when businesses come to us after a poor experience elsewhere.

  • Guaranteed rankings. No agency controls Google. Google itself warns against anyone who guarantees a number one ranking.
  • A fixed number of backlinks each month. This usually means low-quality or paid links, which can harm your site.
  • Cold emails promising page one. Reputable agencies rarely sell this way.
  • Secrecy. If they will not tell you what they are changing on your site, do not hire them.
  • Your accounts in their name. Some agencies create your Google Business Profile or Analytics under their own login, which makes leaving painful.
  • Long lock-in contracts. Twelve months or more with no exit clause protects the agency, not you.
  • Fake or suspicious reviews. Since 6 April 2025, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act has made fake reviews unlawful in the UK, and an agency that offers to write reviews for you is putting your business at risk.

How to compare proposals

Proposals can look very different even when they cost the same. To compare them fairly, put the key points side by side:

CompareWhat to look for
Understanding of your businessDo they reflect your goals, services and areas back accurately?
DiagnosisHave they spotted specific issues on your site, or is it a generic template?
PlanClear priorities for the first three months and how they will be measured
Deliverables or hoursWhat you get each month, and who does it
ReportingEnquiries, sales and revenue, not just rankings
TermsMinimum term, notice period and ownership of accounts and content
PriceFair for the work described, compared with typical market rates

For typical UK price ranges, see our SEO pricing guide. If you are also considering a freelancer or hiring someone in-house, our comparison of agency vs freelancer vs in-house SEO may help.

What local SEO in Cardiff should include

If most of your customers are in Cardiff and the surrounding area, a good proposal should cover the local signals that decide who appears in the map results and the local organic results:

  • A complete, accurate and active Google Business Profile with the right categories and service areas.
  • Consistent business name, address and phone number across directories and local listings.
  • A simple, steady process for earning genuine reviews and replying to them.
  • Service pages and, where justified, area pages that are useful rather than copies with the town name swapped.
  • Links and mentions from relevant Cardiff and Welsh organisations, such as business groups, events, suppliers and local media.
  • Tracking that records calls, forms and bookings, so you can see which work brings customers.

Our article on SEO for Cardiff businesses goes into each of these in more detail.

What to expect once you start

A good agency relationship has a clear rhythm. In the first month, expect onboarding, account access, an audit and an agreed plan. In months two and three, expect fixes, improvements to key pages and early local work. From then on, expect regular reporting, a monthly or quarterly review and a plan that adapts to what the data shows.

Be realistic about timing. Some improvements, especially to your Google Business Profile, can show within weeks, but competitive rankings usually take months. Our guide on how long SEO takes explains what to expect and how to tell early on whether a campaign is working.

Small specialist or large full-service agency?

Cardiff has everything from one-person consultancies to large full-service agencies offering SEO alongside branding, advertising and video. Neither is automatically better.

A smaller, specialist agency usually means senior people working directly on your account, faster decisions and a closer relationship. The trade-off can be less capacity for very large projects. A large full-service agency can run SEO alongside paid media, design and PR, which helps if you want one partner for everything. The trade-off can be that SEO is one service among many, and junior staff may do much of the day-to-day work.

Ask both types the same question: who exactly will work on our account each month, and how much of their time will we get? The answer tells you more than the size of the office.

Getting the best from your agency

Once you have chosen, the way you work together has a big effect on results. The Cardiff businesses that get the most from SEO tend to do a few things well:

  • Name one owner. Have one person in your business who makes decisions and approves work quickly.
  • Share what you know. Tell the agency about new services, seasonal peaks, customer questions and what your competitors are doing. It all improves the content and the plan.
  • Act on recommendations. If changes need your web developer, agree a process so they do not sit in a queue for months.
  • Ask for reviews consistently. Genuine reviews from real customers are one of the strongest local signals, and only you can ask for them.
  • Review results quarterly. Monthly reports show progress, but quarterly reviews are the right time to change direction or budget.

An agency can only work with what it is given. A responsive client often sees results months sooner than one who takes weeks to approve each change.

Making your choice

The right SEO agency in Cardiff is the one that understands your goals, can show relevant results, explains its plan clearly and treats your business as its own. Speak to two or three, ask the same questions, compare the proposals side by side and trust your judgement about who you would want to work with every month.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an SEO agency based in Cardiff?

Not necessarily, but it can help. A Cardiff agency will understand local search behaviour, neighbourhoods, competitors and Welsh-language considerations, and can meet you in person. What matters most is proven experience in your type of business and a clear, honest plan. A strong agency elsewhere can still do excellent work for a Cardiff business.

How much does an SEO agency in Cardiff cost?

Prices vary with scope and competition. Local SEO for a small Cardiff business commonly sits around £500 to £1,500 a month, while broader programmes for businesses competing across Wales or the UK often cost £1,500 to £5,000 a month or more. One-off audits are usually priced separately.

How many SEO agencies should I speak to?

Speaking to three is usually enough to compare approaches without wasting weeks. Give each the same brief, including your goals, budget range, key services and locations, so their proposals are easy to compare.

What should a Cardiff SEO agency do in the first month?

In the first month you should expect onboarding, access to your accounts, a technical and content audit, competitor and keyword research, a review of your Google Business Profile and an agreed roadmap. Quick fixes can often begin straight away, but the main output is a clear, prioritised plan.

Should my website be in Welsh and English for SEO?

It depends on your audience. Private businesses in Cardiff are not generally required to have a bilingual website, but it can help if you serve Welsh-speaking customers or work with the public sector. If you add Welsh, build proper Welsh pages with the right language tags rather than relying on automatic translation.
